I graduated from secondary School feeling very excited and looking forward to go into the university. I was asked back then what I applied to study in the university; I would tell anyone willing to listen that I applied to study Engineering. Unfortunately I didn't get admission that year because I did not meet the cut-off mark (at that time Post-UTME wasn't a thing). I kept writing jamb till Post-UTME was introduced, and I still hadn't gotten admitted.
A New Direction
After failed attempts to get into the university through Jamb, I applied for pre-degree program, and boom- I passed the entrance exam and got accepted to study Biology Education.
People discouraged me, and a statement I got was "ha...na teacher you wan be..." but then I reflected back to the times when my mum would go the extra mile for her students, how I saw them come to visit her at home and appreciate her for the impact she had on them. I also remember some excellent teachers back when I was in secondary school, then I said to myself "I will study education and get to the peak of my career".
Where My Passion Comes From
This passion I have stemmed from having excellent and passionate teachers, one of whom was my mom.
So I Ask You...
What type of teacher do you want to be?
Did you find yourself as a teacher because there was no other job available? or just because that was what JAMB gave to you (like we usually say in Nigeria 🙂)?
Sometimes, when we make decisions we need to remember that God is the one who directs us. Things may not go as you planned or wanted, but there's a lot waiting for you out there.
Equip yourself, grow professionally, infuse strategies in your classroom.
You never know when opportunities will present themselves, so you need to be ready and prepare for when the opportunity presents itself.
A Path I Didn't See Coming
If someone had told me that my job as a teacher would led me to the united states I may not have believed it but God planned everything, set me in positions, provided opportunities for me, and instilled that desire for growth and zeal to implement in my classroom.
A Word of Encouragement
Do not despise your beginning, no matter how small or where you are currently in your career. Seize every opportunity that comes your way to grow. Commit it to God, and he will direct your path.
Why I Keep Going
What keeps me going and why I choose to remain in this profession?
I love to see the smile, excitement and joy on the faces on my students at the end of every school year, acknowledging the impact I have had on them. Watching them at the start of school confused, not sure of what to expect, and facing other challenges, and then seeing them grow over a year under my tutelage is something I'm grateful for. I'm glad to have taught and impacted students who are now in various professions, doing well for themselves and I'll never take the opportunity to impact these young ones for granted.
