Learning can be so much fun. All you need to do is be creative.
Sometimes take your students outside the classroom, allow them connect with things in their environment. Help them link what they see to whatever lesson they're being taught. You can also infuse games to the lesson-it really works!
A Fun Game I Play With My Students
One simple way I bring fun into my classroom is by adding a game twist to vocabulary review.
Here's how it works:
I tell students to pick a partner they're comfortable with. (This matters because I usually assign seats and partners, so this gives them some choice,)
Each pair plays a quick round Rock-Paper-Scissors.
The winner gets to choose:
Any word from the Vocabulary wall (e.g., friction, convergent subduction, solute, digestion, etc.)
A word for their partner to use as well
On their packet (a worksheet that has a blank side), each student will either:
Draw what the word means
Define it
or Explain the process the word describes
I walk around the class and check each group's work.
Each correct answer earns 10 points
They do this activity for six turns
The partner with the highest score at the end wins an incentive!
This Isn't a One-Size-Fits All
This kind of activity may not work the same way for every teacher or classroom, and that's okay!
But here's my advice:
Be innovative. Search the internet for ideas. Talk to fellow teachers.
You'll be amazed at how transformed your classroom can become just by changing how learning is delivered.
Make Room for Joy in Learning
If you do activities consistently, you'll notice:
Students become more engaged
They learn without even realizing it
You'll look forward to stepping into your classroom each day!
And guess what?
You don't have to do it everyday. It could be:
Once a week,
Once a month
Or whenever it fits your schedule
What matters is that you're creating joyful learning moments.
